Craughwell United Notes 4/5 February   06/02/2023

Craughwell United Juniors lost 4-0 away to Loughrea in the Championship on Saturday afternoon. With a lot of players missing through sickness and injury it was another chance to give more under-21s game time at this level. United started slowly and conceded after ten minutes.Captain Alan O'Riordan received a harsh red card on thirty five minutes but the team responded well after that. Craughwell improved in the second half with Eoin Shiel coming closest to finding the equaliser. However after digging deep in an attempt to get back in the game,Loughrea scored three late goals to take the three points.

Our U21 side won their fourth game in a row with a fine 7-1 win over Dynamo Blues at the Maree Astro on the previous Wednesday night. Cian Irwin, Brandon Morgan and the lively Shane Gorman gave Craughwell a three goal lead by halftime. Further second half goals from Eoin Shiel (2), Alex Craven and Matthew Faherty completed the resounding win. With three games remaining, Craughwell are still in the hunt for Championship League honours.
Back row: Finbarr McFadden, Cian Geoghegan, Ross Whelton, Eoin Nugent, Eoin Shiel, Brandon Morgan.
Front row: Cian Irwin, Kevin Molloy, Matthew Faherty, Dara Collins, Shane Gorman (missing from photo Alex Craven).

Craughwell United U18 Boys hosted Knocknacarra's first team in the Connacht Shield on Sunday. The Premier league side went ahead early and had a two goal advantage at the half. United created decent chances and came close after a nice move but Shane Gorman was unlucky to just put it over. Craughwell tired in the last twenty minutes but Knocknacarra finished strongly adding two more. 0-4 the final score.
Back row: Charlie Duggan (Manager), Sean Mulry, Cormac Regan, Lucas Keane, Dillon Moran, Adam Jordan, Michael Woods, Liam Plower, Shaun Plower (Coach).
Front row: Raphael Hardy, Ian Ward, Daniel Galvin, Alex Duggan, Lian McDaid (Captain), Shane Gorman, John McGovern.

The U14 boys were on the wrong end of a 6-1 scoreline on Saturday away to Merlin Woods.  The scoreline was harsh on Craughwell who played some lovely football throughout - especially in the second half. Ryan Gilchrist was the sole United scorer finishing a fine team move to the top corner. There were standout performances from Callum Payne at the back and Paul Keaveney in midfield, while both our goalkeepers, Shane Cahill and Bobby Farrelly coped admirably with the greasy ball and James O’Dwyer also influential on the right wing

Craughwell U12 Boys Maroon continued their unbeaten run with a superb display overcoming Kilshanvey United. First half goals from Ethan Beattie and Jack Flaherty gave United the lead at the break. Ethan Beattie added a third to wrap things up with fine minutes remaining. Cian Kelly's clean sheet and strong performances all over the field saw the tie end 3-0.

The U12 Navy side had a tough morning against fellow title contenders Kinvara on Saturday and came out the wrong side of a 3-0 scoreline. Having conceded early on, United pushed hard - Thomas Glennon denied a goal by a last ditch clearance before half-time. Zach Wholihan led the Craughwell charge after the interval but the home side were twice caught on the break by Kinvara. Despite the result, the Craughwell boys should be proud of their performance.

Craughwell's U12 girls suffered a 4-1 defeat to Kilshanvey at Coleman Park on Sunday. Craughwell started brightly and led at half time from an Abbie Gilligan goal. Craughwell were unable to add to their tally despite creating several chances. A couple of injuries upset United's rhythm and allowed Kilshanvey to take control. Emily Raftery put in a superb performance in midfield. Our three rotating goalkeepers had fine games between the posts and all made telling contributions outfield too. Maeve Desbonnet had an excellent second half in defence, Mia Fitzpatrick played well in midfield, and was instrumental in set pieces and goal kicks, and Niamh Keaveney had a fine game at centre back before taking over in goal.

Isabelle Behan was part of the Galway U12 League team that defeated Midlands league 4-1 in Moate on Sunday
