Craughwell United Notes 7-8 January   08/01/2023

Craughwell United Juniors travelled to Cappagh Park on Sunday to take on Knocknacarra in the Western Hygiene Supplies Championship. United faced 10 men for most of the game, the home 'keeper seeing red after 10 minutes for handling outside the box. Joe Jackson scored for Craughwell after good work from Kevin Molloy and Cillian Dolan but Knocknacarra equalised on the stroke of half time from a set-piece. Knocknacarra were well organised and played well with ten men - their endeavor was rewarded on the hour mark when a speculative shot found the United net. It finished 2-1 to Knocknacarra.

Craughwell U12 Boys Maroon kicked off 2023 with a home win over St. Bernards on Saturday morning. Playing against a strong wind Callan Dolan, Henry Cullaine and Brian O'Gara provided the defensive platform for United to create a number of chances before Darragh O’Donnell opened the scoring. Noah Kineen was fouled and delivered the free kick for Edward Donoghue to hammer home to make it 2-0. Craughwell dominated the second half with the wind at their backs. Edward Donoghue bagged two second half goals to claim yet another hat-trick in what is an extraordinary run of form for him.

Meanwhile the U12 Boys Navy side travelled to high-flying Renmore. Cathal Byrnes came back into the fold following a long term injury. Craughwell dominated the middle of the park with Eanna Tormey and Zach Wholihan standing out. Behind them Jonathan Nolan, Darragh Woods and Iarlaith Morrissey stood strong in defence. The first half saw Cathal Osborne and Thomas Glennon shots blocked. In the second half, Renmore scored via a counter-attack but Craughwell didn't let their heads drop. Iarlaith Morrissey played Zach Wholihan through - he squeezed between two defenders and struck a half volley into the roof of the net. United pushed for the win but still needed a big save from 'keeper Jack Conneely to keep the score at 1-1.

Craughwell United U12 girls defeated Kilshanvey in Kilconly on Sunday in the Division 1&2 Cup. High pressing from Abbie Gilligan, Sophie Meehan and Éabha Smyth laid the foundation for Abbie Gilligan to net a first-half brace and Isabelle Behan to grab a goal of her own. The pressure continued in the second half - Isabelle Behan with two more to complete her hat-trick and one from Ailbhe O’Shea after Niamh Keaveney's shot was initially blocked. Strong performances from Emily Raftery and Grace McGlynn protected the back line well, and clever play by Mia Fitzpatrik on the wing made her a great outlet.
