U14 Girls in extra time Cup win over Athenry   05/09/2014

Craughwell's U14 girls defeated Athenry 3-0 last Saturday in EamonDeacyPark in their long delayed Division 1 Cup Final.

The large crowd were treated to an excellent match played in a sporting but very competitive manner. Playing against the strong breeze in the first half, Craughwell defended brilliantly with the back four dealing with everything Athenry threw at them. Midfield worked tirelessly from box to box on the large pitch and in the second half the United forwards showed their attacking threat with some near misses, but the game ended normal time scoreless.

A few minutes into extra time, United keeper Siobhain Creaven made an outstanding point blank save to keep Athenry out and this turned out to be the game's pivotal moment. Within the next ten minutes, Laura Cunningham had scored a brilliant hat trick to give Craughwell victory.

This was just reward for these girls as they have only lost one league match in two seasons and narrowly missed out on silverware both years. With extra time and the large pitch this was a real squad effort and all the players and subs deserve credit for their performances as they all played their part in this great game.
