Thinking back to our AGM this time last year, we were looking forward to a season full of promise and development both on and off the pitch. When we take stock now of our yearâs work, it may have been our most productive for many a season.
In boyâs soccer,
we had approx 280 registered players, playing on twenty teams over twelve age
categories. I attended many weekend games and all I saw was committed, talented players who represented their club with exemplary
discipline. When the season closed we finished behind only Mervue United and
Salthill Devon in terms of silverware. The U17 boys stole the headlines with
their Division 1 League and Cup double, while the U15, U14 and U11 boys both won
their Divisional Cups in commanding fashion.
In girlâs
soccer, we had approx 90 registered players, playing on seven teams over five
age categories. Every squad was competitive right throughout the season, mostly
finishing in the top four behind Salthill Devon and strong city teams. The U14
girls were unlucky in their league, drawing their final game against Athenry
which cost them a play-off match for the league title. However, they play Athenry
again on Saturday 30 August to decide the Division 1 Cup Final. Please go and
support them in
We just finished our annual Summer Camp today with sixty players from six to thirteen enjoying the week. Our World Cup Day in early July was great fun with nearly seventy club players playing in two different age categories, all trying to win the World Cup Final. We also held an Easter Camp this year with forty players taking part. We are lucky to have Patrick Phillips and several junior coaches to run these club events.
In fundraising, our annual Golf Classic in June raised over â¬2000 while we also launched our Weekly 50/50 Draw last Christmas. We have given out â¬5000 in cash prizes so far with more the â¬3500 generated for the club pitch development. Like any ongoing draw, it needs a consistent push to keep it going so we will be asking each squad to promote the draw on a rota basis twice over the course of the season. The 50/50 Draw is the only regular source of income we have, so it is vital to keep it out there in the Craughwell peopleâs minds. Every â¬2 is helping to put Craughwell soccer on the map!
The biggest
step forward this past season is undoubtedly our new pitch development. Emerald
Pitch Developers are due to seed the new pitch in the next week which will
complete the construction programme. Coming off the back of the new dressing
rooms,
Aidan Collins, CUFC Chairman.
