Craughwell United Notes 29-30 October   31/10/2022

Craughwell United's Junior side suffered a 1-0 league loss to West Coast United on Sunday Afternoon. A 50th minute strike saw United lose ground in the Western Hygiene Supplies Championship.

The U18 Boys entertained Salthill Devon in the Connacht Cup. United equalised twice but still trailed 2-3 at half time - Alex Duggan crossed for Gerry Boyle for the first, Liam Plower netted a free kick for the second. A couple of penalties and a late own-goal in the second half saw Devon advance 5-2.

On Saturday Craughwell U14 Boys hosted St. Bernards in a league match and were unlucky to come out the wrong end of a competitive seven goal thriller. Both sides were evenly matched for most of the first half, before St. Bernards scored two without reply. Eoin Middleton pulled one back, leaving Craughwell trailing 1-2 at the break. St. Bernards scored two goals early in the second half, but Craughwell then played their best football. Goals from Luke Callanan and Shane Mitchell set up a grandstand finish. Craughwell continued to press for a equaliser and came agonisingly close when Harry Comer grazed the outside of the post after a mazy run from Eoin Middleton.

Also on Saturday the Craughwell U12 Boys Maroon played the Mayo Champions Castlebar Celtic in the Connacht Cup. Edward Donoghue put Craughwell ahead with a neat finish but Castlebar hit back from a direct free kick. A few minutes from half time Edward Donoghue made an astounding run through the centre of the Castlebar defence beating a number of defenders along the way, Edward put Noah Kinneen through who pulled the trigger and Craughwell went in the break 2-1 up. Castlebar hit the ground running in the second half with two quick early goals. The Craughwell boys never stopped fighting and while pressing for an equaliser Castlebar scored on the break, settling the tie at 4-2.

Meanwhile the Craughwell U12 Boys Navy won at Cregmore/Claregalway. Craughwell conceded early but then settled into the game and began to take control in the middle of the Park with Zach Houlihan pulling the strings ably supported by Liam Ward and Adam Melia. On the 6 minute mark Cathal Osborne was played through by Milan Karip and he made no mistake in converting the equalizer. First-half sub Jack Melia got on the end of a dangerous ball provided by his brother Adam to make it 1-2. After that it became the Cathal Osborne show scoring on 21 minutes and with a free kick on 29 minutes. In the second half the match was more balanced with Iarlaith Morressy having a great game at left back. Cathal Osborne got his 4th and the teams 5th to kill off any chance of a comeback.

Craughwell United U12 girls continued their fine start to the season with a very competitive 3-1 win over Colemantown on Sunday. Isabelle Behan opened the scoring from a superb assist by Cerys Johnston. Isabelle added a second soon after and a couple of fine saves from Mia Fitzpatrick in goal gave Craughwell a deserved 2-0 half time lead. Craughwell continued pressing in the second half creating numerous chances, with Niamh Keaveney twice going close and Isabelle Behan hitting the side netting before completing her hat-trick to seal a super win.
