Club results from weekend of 1-2 February   06/02/2020

The U18A boys beat Oughterard 4-3 on penalties last Sunday after both teams had played out a 5-5 extra time thriller in Oughterard. With Craughwell only fielding nine players, the home side scored in the first minute after a well worked free kick. Oughterard almost doubled their lead from another free kick but for a fantastic save by our keeper Glenn Lawlor-Smalle. Five minutes later United were level, with the ever reliable Lewis Ryan firing into the top right corner. Then ten minutes before half time Alex Boyle converted a cross from Kevin Molloy to give United the lead. Oughterard continued to press and despite our best efforts they equalised just before the break.

The home side went ahead early into the second half but Craughwell equalised thanks to a great individual goal by Lewis Ryan. Fifteen minutes from time, Oughterard went 4-3 in front. The Craughwell nine were physically tiring but with Phelim McCann, David Lee and Brandon Morgan putting their bodies on the line in defence, United stayed in the game. Then five minutes from time Mikey Donoghue skillfully rounded two players and crossed into Kevin Molloy who levelled the game at 4-4. The last action of normal time saw an Oughterard free kick saved outstandingly by Lawlor-Smalle, taking the game into extra time.

In the first period, United captain Darren O’Brien took charge and made an amazing run from the back and crossed for Donoghue to volley into the roof of the net. However, Oughterard equalised to send to tie into a penalty shootout. Alex Boyle, Mikey Donoghue, Lewis Ryan and David Lee all scored their penalties, thus sending Craughwell through to the next round of the Jimmy Sullivan Cup after an incredible effort.

Earlier on Sunday, the Craughwell United junior team kept their promotion hopes alive with a 4-2 home win over Moyne Villa. After going behind on the quarter hour mark, Gavin O Toole set up striker Eoin Fahy only two minutes later for the equaliser. The outstanding moment of the game fell to Eoin Lally on fifty minutes when he cut in from the left wing to fire an unstoppable shot into the top corner from thirty yards out. Jack Lally then set up striker Alan Callanan to put United 3-1 up before Villa pulled a goal back going into the final quarter. However, Lally and Callanan combined again to seal the win for Craughwell.

Elsewhere, the U16 boys lost 3-1 away to Kinvara United while the U12B boys were defeated 3-2 away to Gort United. The U13 girls lost 3-1 away to Salthill Devon in their Premier Cup semi-final clash.
