Craughwell United’s U18 boys bowed out of the Connacht Shield at the quarter final stage after a 3-1 defeat away to Boyle Celtic last Saturday afternoon. Craughwell took a long time to settle into the game and it was the home side who opened the scoring. United soon leveled when Alan Callanan found Adam Lawlor-Smalle (pictured) at the back post; the left back coolly slotting home the equaliser. However, Boyle scored again on forty minutes to take a 2-1 half-time lead. Ger Fahy and Declan Burke rallied the team to a better second half display, creating several clear chances that went a begging. However it was Boyle who scored the all important next goal on a break away attack and ultimately sealed a merited 3-1 win. Best for Craughwell on the day were Diarmuid McCartin, Adam Lawlor-Smalle and Conor Roche.
The Craughwell junior side lost 3-1 at home to Loughrea B in their penultimate game of the season. The away side raced into a two goal lead before United midfielder Gavin O Toole scored a wonderful individual goal to reduce the deficit. However, Loughrea were awarded a penalty soon after and duly converted to clinch the three points. Earlier at Coleman Park, the U13A boys lost 5-2 to Cregmore/Claregalway FC in the Premier League. Craughwell went three down after twenty minutes before Liam Mulveen earned and scored a penalty kick in reply. Kieran O Connor then scored directly from a corner to make it 3-2 in the second half, but by pushing hard for an equaliser, United unfortunately conceded two late goals.
Elsewhere, the U13B boys were defeated 3-1 away to Athenry B while the U12B boys were held 1-1 by Maree/Oranmore C at Coleman Park after missing a few great chances to win the game.
On Sunday, all of our club’s scheduled league matches were postponed due to the inclement weather conditions and unplayable pitches.
