Club results from weekend of 29-30 October   03/11/2016

The U13 boys (pictured) progressed to the fourth round of the SFAI Cup with a 1-0 over Moyne Villa last Saturday at Coleman Park. The winning goal came midway through the first half when Liam Mulveen played a lovely through ball to Kieran O'Connor who cut in from the right to go one on one with the keeper and he rifled the ball past the keeper into the top left corner of the net. Five minutes later, Adam Stewart found O'Connor again who saw his shot rattle off the crossbar. Craughwell continued to push forward, with the midfield trio of Cian Geoghegan, Mulveen and Stewart dictating the game. Shortly afterwards, O'Connor got around the back of the Moyne Villa defence, squared the ball to Niall Dillon who found the back of the net only for the referee to rule it offside. Just before half time, Mulveen's cross to the back post found Darragh McCartin, whose shot went narrowly wide.

In the second half Craughwell continued to push forward with Mulveen, Stewart and O'Connor linking up well but couldn't find a way to get past the impressive Moyne Villa keeper for a second goal. Craughwell thought they scored a second when Niall Dillon's shot was prodded home by Mulveen only for the referee to again rule it offside, another marginal decision. The Craughwell defence of Danny Morrissey, Odhran Keane, Oisin Quirke and Nigel Kelly dealt with everything that came their way. For all Craughwell's possession, Moyne Villa won a corner in the dying minutes. From the corner, Aaron Gilligan, making his first appearance in goal, made a vital save at his near post. A scramble ensued but the Craughwell defence stood firm, cleared the ball and the referee blew the full time whistle. A very good display from Craughwell with Tom Doran and Jerry Boyle playing their part when called upon.

The Junior men’s side stay top of Division Four after a 2-0 home win over Cregmore/Claregalway FC. Just before the interval, Patrick Phillips found Mike Madden with a lovely through ball and while the keeper did well to block the striker's initial shot, the rebound fell to fellow strike partner Shaun Gilligan to score. Just after the break, Craughwell went two up when Gallagher scored again to seal an important win. Best for Craughwell were defenders Alan Tormey, Mark Cunningham, Jonathan Leech and Adam Lawlor-Smalle who soaked up a lot of first half pressure from the visiting team and managed to keep them scoreless throughout.

Also on Saturday, the U14 boys lost 5-0 away to Bearna Na Forbacha while the U12C boys earned a very creditable 1-1 draw away to Mervue United C with Adam Jordan on target for Craughwell. The U12B boys lost 7-3 away to Kilshanvey United while the U12A boys were 6-1 winners at home to Athenry B. Sean Mulry grabbed a hatrick with Roan Budge, Alex Duggan and Senan Keane also finding the net.

On Sunday, the U16 girls won their opening game 2-0 in a competitive encounter against Mervue United.  Stout defending was needed throughout the first half where goalkeeper Siobhan Creaven marshalled the defence of Roisin Phillips, Emer Mulveen, Amber Whelton and player of the match Hannah Mahony. Ten minutes before the break Mia Joyce worked the ball clear of defenders and scored a fine solo effort. Craughwell soon came more into the game as Ruth Tansey, Sarah Woods, Beth Sullivan and Veronica Craven created fine passing moves through midfield. Then an excellent break started by Ailbhe Miskella combining with her sister Emily Miskella and Megan Molloy was finished off with Ailbhe scoring herself.  Second half substitute Molly Sullivan contributed great energy when introduced to close out an important first match win for Craughwell.

The U12 girls Navy team lost 4-0 at home to Cregmore/Claregalway FC in a match that was closer than the final result suggests while on the other pitch the U12 girls Blue team drew 2-2 to Cregmore/Claregalway FC B with Aisling Whyte on target for United.
