The Craughwell United U13 boys travelled to Athlone last Saturday and ran out 3-1 winners over St. Francis in the first round of the SFAI Cup. Michael Trehy opened the scoring for United before Kieran O Connor scored a free kick to make it 2-0 by half time. Craughwell went further ahead just after the break when good work from Adam Stewart set up Aaron Gilligan to score. St. Francis pulled a goal back late on but the visitors were full value for their win. The U14 boys were beaten 2-0 at home to Strand Celtic in their SFAI Cup first round tie. Elsewhere on Saturday, the U12A boys were 5-3 winners away to Oughterard with a hatrick from Daire Crowe and one each from Alex Duggan and Fiachra Bond. The U12B boysâ efforts went unrewarded in losing 2-0 at home to Cregmore/Claregalway C while the U12C boys were 11-2 winners away to Salthill Devon D.
Also on Saturday afternoon at Coleman Park, the Junior side (pictured) were held 1-1 by local rivals Athenry B in the first league match of the new season. This was the third meeting between the sides in recent weeks after Athenry B defeated United in their Lillis Cup replay a week earlier. Craughwell started the first half strongly and went close on several occasions with Mike Madden, Cathal Greaney and Gavin O Toole all denied. Then on forty one minutes, O Toole found Madden with a fine crossed ball and the striker made no mistake to give Craughwell the half time lead. The visitors pressed in the second half and were rewarded with a penalty only to put the resultant spot kick over the crossbar. However, continued Athenry pressure eventually yielded the equaliser and while both sides created more chances, the final 1-1 scoreline was a fair result. Best for Craughwell on the day were left back Cathal Reidy, midfielder Benny Gallagher and striker Mike Madden before he was substituted due to injury.
