Club results from weekend of 27-28 February.   29/02/2016

Last Saturday, the Junior Men’s side held on to top spot in Division Four with a 3-1 away win over Athenry B. Benny Gallagher with two and Ruairi McArdle were on target for United. The U15 boys went one up at home to Colga courtesy of Ian McGlynn but the away side scored two second half goals to clinch a 2-1 win. Earlier, the U14 boys were defeated 7-3 at home to Premier League leaders Mervue United. The city side went in at the break 5-0 up, but coach Dave McFadden roused the home side for the second half and two goals from Ryan Gallagher and one from Cian Garman narrowed the lead. Sean Connaghton then hit the woodwork and the Mervue keeper pulled off a couple of great saves as Craughwell sensed a famous comeback. However with minutes remaining Mervue grabbed two more to see off the brave fightback. Great credit to the Craughwell boys who showed a lot of character in the second half.

Also on Saturday, the U12A boys were 2-1 winners away to Corrib Celtic. With the memory of last weeks 'one that got away' still fresh in their minds the Craughwell squad immediately set about the business of the day and after a sustained period of attack were rewarded with the first score, a well taken goal by Nigel Kelly. A few minutes later Aaron Gilligan slipped a beautiful ball through to Darragh McCartin who immediately slotted home to the back of the net. The home side mounted a counter attack in the second half and were rewarded with a goal however the Craughwell defence stood firm and aided by some agile goalkeeping from Jerry Boyle, finished the game with the important win.

The U12 development squad earned a creditable draw away to Salthill Devon. This match was very tightly contested and a thoroughly enjoyable game with the first Craughwell goal coming from a mistake by the opposition under intense pressure from Cathal Kelly. Lukas Schukat scored to level the game just before the break and Craughwell stood strong in defence under the leadership of Niall Dillon to finish the game with a final score of 2-2.

On Sunday, the U17 boys fought hard before eventually losing 5-0 at home to Premier League leaders Galway Hibs while later in the afternoon the U18 girls (pictured) were unlucky to lose 2-1 to Corrib Rangers. The away side went one up early on before Caoimhe Reidy played a great ball into striker Laura Cunningham who scored to square the match. Into the second half, United keeper Siobhan Creaven pulled off a fantastic save to keep the sides level but could do nothing minutes later when the Rangers striker blasted a great half volley over the reach of the United keeper. Craughwell then missed several chances to equalise from Caoimhe Reidy, Laura Cunningham and Ciana Reidy, but great credit must go to the Rangers keeper who was outstanding all day.
